Ans:- Mandela explains that freedom is an absolute necessity because it is one of the main characteristics of man. It cannot be divided. It also paves the way for equality and thus helps in preventing separation on the basis of any cultural, social or religious differences.

Ans:- In the above line 'he' means tiger. 'Flaming stripes' refer to the distinctive long narrow stripes on the tiger's body.

Ans:- Seeing the dangerous pirate, Belinda's face turned pale and she started screaming for help. All the animals ran away except Custard. But Custard prepared to fight bravely and eventually he cut the pirate into pieces and ate him. Thus, the Custard Dragon attacked the pirates.

18. (a) Briefly describe how Ausable defeated Max’s scheme to take away the report.         5

Ans:- When Ausable saw Max standing in the middle of his room with a pistol pointed at him, he was not surprised. Instead, he hatched a secret plan to get rid of her. He also started accusing the hotel management of not closing the balcony. He also said that once someone had entered his room through it. Then, Max said that he entered the room using the passkey.

Ausable, on the other hand, paid no attention to Max. Instead, he gave the description of the balcony to author Fowler. Furthermore, he said that his room had been part of a larger unit. The next room had a balcony that extended below its window. He also stressed his belief that Max had entered the room from that balcony.

Ausable presented the entire story about the balcony as if it was a completely natural formation. Eventually, all this convinced Max that there was a balcony attached to his room.

Later, Max threatens Ausable with a pistol and gives him the missiles papers. Suddenly they heard someone knocking on the door. Ausable then said that he had asked the police to come to protect those documents. Meanwhile, Max went near the window of the balcony to hide himself. He also pointed a gun at Ausable while he was hiding. The result was that due to the absence of a balcony, he fell to the ground and died.

19. (a) Briefly describe the extraordinary behaviour of Mrs. Hall’s furniture.     5

Ans:- The landlord and his wife were surprised to find the scientist's door open, which was usually closed and locked. When he peeked through the door, there was no one inside the room. So he decided to investigate there.

Suddenly Mrs. Hall heard something sniffing near her ear. A moment later, the cap on the bedpost bounced off and fell on his face. Then the chair in the bedroom came alive and started attacking him directly. As she and her husband turned back in fear, the chair pushed them out of the room. This incident leads Mrs. Hall to believe that the room is haunted by spirits and that these spirits have something to do with the strange scientist.

(b) Who was Griffin? Why and how did he become invisible? How did he become a homeless wanderer?        1+2+2=5

Ans:- Griffin was a brilliant scientist. He conducted experiments one after another to prove that the human body could be invisible.

Griffin became invisible after swallowing some rare potions that he had invented after many experiments. He wanted a place to rest and stay warm on cold days. He also wanted a place to wear clothes and something to eat. So, to escape the cold and people, he entered a big store in London and started appearing there.

Although Griffin was a brilliant scientist, he was also an anarchist. His landlord did not like Griffin. He tried to take her out. To take revenge he set the house on fire. To leave without being seen, he took off his clothes and became invisible. Then he started roaming on the streets. This is how Griffin became a homeless wanderer.

Examinations are an integral part of academic life. They have been the traditional and conventional ways of testing a person’s talent, level of understanding and his range of study. One’s performance in examinations general determines one’s ability and career prospects.

Examinations are there in the schools, colleges and universities to be faced by one to prove his/her learning abilities. Examinations are there to be faced to get oneself selected for any employment. Even the university toppers need to pass all-India level competitive examinations to get themselves selected to any administrative service. Such being the importance of examinations, one should face them with proper preparation and conviction. One should not take the consolation from the old adage, “failures are the pillars of success”. No doubt, repeated failures help one in gathering experience. But it must not be forgotten that student life covers a limited period of time in our life. Since student life provides the basis for a future career, one should take it seriously and try to come out successful in the successive examinations. Good results in examinations ensure a better prospect in future life.

Obedience to Parents

Introduction: Obedience is a great virtue. Without obedience, society cannot exist even for a day. It is the duty of every person to obey his parents. Obedience is the duty of the child.

Our Parents: Our existence in this world is due to our parents. They are living gods and goddesses for us. He loves us more than himself. They know better what is good for us and what is not. They are willing to sacrifice their lives to make us happy. When we are happy, they are happy and when we are in trouble they are sad.

Our Duty: Parents are our selfless friends. Therefore, it is our first duty to obey Him in all things and do what He wants to do. We should always obey them and respect them. We should not do what they forbid us to do. It is our duty to please them in every way and be grateful to them.

Disobedience: Disobeying parents is a great sin. Disobedient children are the most ungrateful creatures on earth. They are vile and villainous and up to no good. They can never improve in life.

(b) COVID-19

Introduction: COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China in late December 2019 and then spread throughout the world. Ultimately it took the form of an epidemic.

What type of disease is it: It is an infectious disease that can cause illness in animals or humans. Fever, fatigue and dry cough are the most common symptoms of this disease.

How can we avoid it: We can avoid COVID-19 by following the activities given below:

(i) We should regularly clean our hands with alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with water.

(ii) We should keep ourselves away as much as possible.

(iii) We should always wear a mask while going out.

(iv) We should avoid touching our nose, eyes and mouth with our hands.

(v) While coughing or sneezing, we should cover our mouth and nose with our bent elbow or tissue.

(vi) Apart from this, we should also avoid shaking hands and hugging others.

(vii) Additionally, older individuals and those suffering from high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, cancer, etc. are more likely to develop serious illness than others.

Conclusion: In conclusion, it can be said that since no cure for COVID-19 has been discovered yet, we should follow the above rules properly.

(c) Spring Season in Assam

Introduction: There are six seasons in Assam as well as India. They are spring, summer, autumn, winter, rainy and dew seasons.

Description of Spring: It is the loveliest of all seasons. In this season, birds chirp and southerly wind starts blowing. Animals come alive and plants look beautiful. Various types of flowers start blooming. The air is pleasant and fragrant.

The end of the long winter period marks the beginning of spring. The months of February and March are generally considered part of the spring season. In this season, intense heat is experienced during the day and mild cold at night.

Spring symbolizes new beginnings, change and the celebration of many festivals. Assam is a state rich in agriculture. There is rainfall in this season which helps in watering the plants sown by the farmers. This is the season that radiates positive and vital energy.

Conclusion: All this to say that spring is the period when people are excited with health and happiness. The days are longer than the nights which proves to be a significant booster as people enjoy the extra hours of sun.

A Tragic Road Accident

One day an old man was going to the market to buy some medicines. He had to cross a road. When he was crossing the road a speeding car hit him and ran away. The old man was badly injured. Due to which a crowd of people gathered at the spot. He only expressed sympathy for the seriously injured veteran. He also gave a speech on rash driving but no one came forward to help him.

On the other hand, two boys were returning home from school. On the way he saw a crowd of people and immediately reached there. He also saw that the old man was about to die. Meanwhile they called an ambulance and eventually took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Lesson: Service to man is service to God.

Nalbari: On March 16, at around 2.30 pm, a massive fire broke out in Nalbari. Tomorrow.

Bata Chowk and Nalbari were almost destroyed by a massive fire yesterday afternoon. A nearby hut also caught fire and then the fire spread due to the wind. Apart from this, fire broke out in the market shed also. Due to this, more than ten shops were burnt to ashes. Fire brigade personnel and local people brought the fire under control. No one has been injured yet. A huge amount of around three crores was burnt to ashes. But no one died.

Electric power has proved itself to be the life-force of modern civilization all over the world. As the body of any animal, including man, is kept animated by the life-force, so is the modern civilization kept animated by electric power. Michael Faraday discovered electric power. After him many scientists contributed to gathering electric power from various sources for its use for different purposes. Now-a-days, power is tapped from various sources. Among them hydropower projects and thermal power projects are widely prevalent. In hydroelectric power projects wheels are run with the help of water currents of rivers and streams. The wheels propelled by water current generate electric power. In thermal power projects, electric power is generated by burning coal. Portable generators also produce electric power when they are run burning diesel or kerosene. Since recent times electric power is gathered from sunshine and wind also.
