(a) What does the word ‘Homo sapiens’ means?

Ans:- The word Homo sapiens is a scientific Latin term that means "the human race".

(b) Who was Inanna?

Ans:- Inanna was the Sumerian goddess of love, war, fertility, wisdom, and justice. She was also known as the "Lady of Heaven" and the "Queen of Heaven".

(c) Who authored Rajatarangini?

Ans:- Kalhana (1148–1149) wrote Rajatarangini (Sanskrit: “River of Kings”).

(d) What was ‘Dawa’?

Ans:- The Daw'a was a well-organized movement that overthrew the Umayyads in 750 and replaced them with the Abbasids.

(e) Who discovered the theory of gravity?

Ans:- Sir Isaac Newton.

(f) Name the first printed book.

Ans:- Gutenberg Bible.

(g) Who first wrote the Geography of Africa?

Ans:- Johannes Leo Africanus.

Ans:- On 12th October 1492.

(i) Who was Naito Konan?

Ans:- Naito Konan (1866–1934) was a Japanese scholar and a leading figure of 20th-century Sinology.

(j) Who invented the spinning jenny?

Ans:- James Hargreaves.

(k) In which year was the ‘Suez Canal’ opened as trade route?

Ans:- On November 17, 1869.

(l) Who was the founder of modern China?

Ans:- Sun Yat-sen is often called the "father of modern China".

2. Answer the following questions in brief: 2x12=24

(a) Write two differences between hominids and hominoids.

Ans:- Here are two differences between hominids and hominoids:-

(i) Posture: Hominids have erected posture and they are bipedal, whereas hominoids are quadrupedal. This means that hominids walk on two legs, while hominoids walk on four legs.

(ii) Brain size: The brain of hominids is larger than that of hominoids. The average human brain size is approximately 1,300 cubic centimetres, while the average hominoid brain size is smaller.

(b) What is Warka Head?

Ans:- The Warka Head, also known as the Mask of Warka, is a marble sculpture of a woman's head dated to 3100–2900 BC. It is one of the earliest and most important examples of a naturalistic depiction of the human face in art history.

(c) Name two industries developed in the Roman Empire.

Ans:- Small scale industrial production also took place in the Roman Empire. Some of the items produced in the factories included oil lamps, bowls, cookware, and amphorae (earthenware storage jars).

(d) What is Islamic calendar?

Ans:- The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months. The Islamic calendar is based on the cycle of the moon, with each month beginning around the time of the new moon. The Islamic calendar is used to determine the correct days for Islamic holidays and rituals, such as fasting periods and the correct time for Hajj.

(e) Write two characteristics of feudalism.

Ans:- Here are two characteristics of feudalism:-

(i) Decentralized Power: Feudalism was characterized by a decentralized political system. Local kings had significant power and authority in their areas. The king's authority was limited, and his control over nobles and vassals often depended on their loyalty and support.

(ii) Land-based social hierarchy: Feudalism was a social and economic hierarchical system that favoured the king and the feudal lords. The king distributed the land to the feudal lords, who in turn distributed it to the tenants. Tenants were given a small share of the land revenue. The feudal lords were cruel.

(f) Name two intellectual women of 15th-16th century Europe.

Ans:- Here are some intellectual women of 15th and 16th century Europe:-

(i) Laura Cerreta: (1469-1499) A native of Brescia, Italy, Cerreta was a renowned scholar.

(ii) Cassandra Fedele: (1465-1558) A native of Venice, Fedele was known for her sensitivity to humanist ideas and was one of the most renowned scholars of her time.

(g) What is humanism?
