PART - I

(Botany)

(Marks: 35)

1. Write the answer of the following briefly: 1x 5=5

(a) What is binomial nomenclature?

Ans:- Binomial nomenclature is a system of naming organisms using two Latin names: the genus and the species.

(b) What is prothallus?

Ans:- A prothallus is the heart-shaped, haploid gametophyte stage in the life cycle of ferns and related plants.

(c) Name one red algae.

Ans:- Porphyra is a type of red algae.

(d) What is called by meristem?

Ans:- Meristem is actively dividing tissue responsible for plant growth.

(e) What is hydroponics?

Ans:- Hydroponics is a technique of growing plants without soil, using a nutrient-rich water solution.

2. Write short answer of the following: 2x5=10

(a) What are the five kingdoms of living world?

Ans:- The five kingdoms of the living world are Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.

(b) Write the characteristics of prokaryotic cell.

Ans:- Characteristics of Prokaryotic Cells are:-

Prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, they have a single circular DNA as genetic material without histones, and they possess 70S ribosomes and a cell wall often containing peptidoglycan.

(c) Mention the two functions of corolla.

Ans:- Functions of the Corolla are:-

The corolla attracts pollinators such as insects with its bright colors and fragrance, and protects the inner reproductive organs such as the stamens and carpels.

(d) Name the various types of activation.

Ans:- Types of Activation are:-

Activation refers to enzyme activation energy in catalysis; types include allosteric activation and covalent modification, although it is primarily discussed in terms of lowering activation energy barriers.

(e) What are the directions of translocation?

Ans:- Directions of Translocation are:-

Translocation in the phloem is bidirectional, from source (e.g., leaves) to sink (e.g., roots or fruits), either upward or downward depending on the plant's needs.

3. Write about the various modifications of stem. 3

Ans:- In plants, stems undergo various modifications to perform functions such as storage, support, propagation, and protection. These modifications occur underground, above ground, and in the air, helping the plant survive.

(i) Underground Modifications: Rhizomes, like those of ginger, store food and aid in vegetative propagation with scale leaves and buds. Tubers, such as potatoes, act as storage organs with axillary buds (eyes) for the development of new plants. Bulbs (onions) and corms (taro) also store nutrients underground for perennial survival.

(ii) Above-Ground Modifications: Above-ground stems, like runners in grasses, spread horizontally above the ground for vegetative propagation. Stolons in strawberries and offsets in Eichhornia similarly produce new plants from their tips.

(iii) Aerial Modifications: Aerial stems form tendrils for climbing in cucumbers, thorns for protection in citrus fruits, and phylloclades in cacti for photosynthesis and water storage.

4. Mitochondria are powerhouse of the cell.' Explain it. 3

Ans:- Mitochondria are called the "powerhouse of the cell" due to their role in ATP production. They perform cellular respiration, converting glucose into energy through the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain.

Mitochondrial Structure: The cristae of the inner membrane contain oxysomes (ATP synthase) that produce ATP from ADP and Pi. This double-membraned organelle, with its own DNA, efficiently generates energy for cellular activities.

Role of Energy: During respiration, mitochondria oxidize pyruvate into CO2 and H2O, trapping the energy as ATP, the universal energy currency of the cell.

5. Draw and describe the internal structure of chloroplast. 4
