War (1824-1826) between the British East India Company and the Burmese Empire.
It was the culmination of serious conflicts arising from border disputes, as
Burmese expansion in Assam, Manipur, and Arakan threatened British interests in
Bengal.
Here is a
brief background to the treaty:-
(i) Burmese
Expansionist Policy: The Burmese Konbaung dynasty, under King Bodawpaya and
later King Bagyidaw, aggressively expanded its territory, conquering Arakan
(1784), Manipur (1813), and Assam (1817-1822).
(ii) Border
Disputes and Refugees: The Burmese conquests led to frequent border clashes
with the British, particularly over the border regions of Arakan and Bengal.
Thousands of refugees fled into British territory, further escalating tensions.
(iii)
Conflict in Cachar: The immediate cause was a clash over control of the
independent states of Cachar and Jaintia, which Burma also targeted, bringing
them into direct conflict with British security interests.
(iv) Outbreak
of War (1824): In March 1824, the British formally declared war, aiming to
halt Burmese expansion and protect their commercial interests in Northeast
India.
(v) British
Victory: Despite initial resistance, the British, utilizing superior naval
power and modern weaponry, pushed back the Burmese forces and eventually
advanced towards the capital, Ava, leading to the treaty.
The treaty
resulted in the cession of Assam to the British, ending Ahom rule and marking
