(a) For how long had the Verger been working at St. Peter's?

Ans: Verger had been working at St. Peter's Church for the past sixteen years.

(b) Where had the new vicar come from?

Ans: The new vicar came from the East End.

(c) What name does R. K. Narayan propose for his most ambitious work?

Ans: Narayan's most ambitious work, which he had been planning for years, was to write a book called 'The Testament of a Walker'.

(d) What does R. K. Narayan lack and yet does not regret?

Ans: R.K. Narayan lacks sensitivity towards the automobile and yet he does not regret it.

(e) Whose voice does Mriganko Babu recognize in the voice of the Scarecrow?

Ans: Mriganko Babu recognizes the voice of the scarecrow as that of Abhiram, who was once his servant.

(f) Where does Mriganko Babu's driver go to fetch petrol?

Ans: When Mriganko Babu got stuck in the middle of nowhere. His car ran out of petrol. He sends his driver Sudhir to a nearby place called Panagarh to fetch petrol.

(g) How much money had Della managed to save for Jim's present?

Ans: Della is able to save only one dollar and eighty-seven cents.

(h) What was the full name of Jim?

Ans: Mr. James Dillingham Young.

(i) What is the name of the philosopher mentioned by the person sitting at the table next to Robert Lynd's at the lounge of the hotel?

Ans: Epictetus was the name of the philosopher mentioned by the man at the table next to Robert Lind in the hotel lounge.

(j) To whom does Lynd compare himself in his eagerness in desiring wisdom?

Ans: Lynd compared himself to the wisest King Solomon in the Bible in his eagerness to acquire knowledge.

2. Answer any five of the following: 2×5=10

(a) How did the Verger regard his official dress?

Ans: On the Verger considered his official dress to be a dignified symbol of his office. Without it, he felt somewhat inadequately dressed.

(b) What business did Albert Edward Foreman set up and where?

Ans: Albert Edward Foreman established business as a tobacco salesman and INS news agent. He established a tobacco and sweets business. He started it from a long street where there was no tobacco seller.

(c) What is R. K. Narayan's philosophy that leaves him indifferent to a hike in the price of petrol?

Ans: They believe that the ultimate destiny of man is to walk, and that is why he is endowed with a pair of legs, which can function without petrol or gears. This philosophy makes them indifferent to any 'rise' in the price of petrol.

(d) What are the things that Narayan values and what cause these to be lost?

Ans: Narayan highly valued his privacy and anonymity. Both were lost when he moved around in his gaudy car as the refined nature and unique looks of his car piqued the interest of the people whenever he went somewhere and thus, he was always in the public eye. Thus, Narayan compared his car to Howrah riding an elephant and lamented that both were equally eager.

(e) Where had Mrigankoshekhar Mukhopadhyay been invited and why?

Ans: Mriganko Babu was returning to Kolkata. A club in Durgapur invited him to a cultural function in honour of Mriganko Babu. That's why he left for Durgapur early in the morning and after the program he was returning back to Kolkata.

(f) Why was Mriganko Babu terrified?

Ans: On his way back to the city, Mriganko Babu gets stuck near a paddy field as his car has run out of petrol. There he meets Scarecrow Topi who comes to life and addresses him as "Babu" in a human voice. This hasty scene put Mriganko Babu in a very bad position. So, he panicked.

(g) What were the prized possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs?

Ans: The James Dillingham Youngs had prized possessions - Jim's old pricey watch, family heirlooms and Della's long beautiful shiny hair.

(h) What does Della expect Jim to say when he returns and sees her?

Ans: Della thought Jim would kill her. If he did not kill her, he would take another look at her. In that case Jim will tell her she looks like a chorus girl from Coney Island.

(i) What does Lynd expect philosophers to do?

Ans: Lynd expected philosophers to painstakingly seek knowledge, so that he could obtain knowledge at the cost of a few shillings.

(j) Why was the stealing of the lamp unprofitable to the thief?

Ans: Stealing the lamp was not profitable for the thief because for the lamp he became a thief, became an unbeliever. He even acquired animalistic qualities for Deepak and his moral degradation.

3. Answer any three of the following:  4x3=12

(a) Why was the bank manager in Mangham's tale surprised? Why did it seem the most extraordinary thing he had ever heard?

Ans: The bank manager was surprised to learn that Albert Edward Foreman, a tobacco salesman, had amassed a fortune of thirty thousand pounds uneducated. He could never imagine that an illiterate man would earn such a huge amount. He was amazed at what Albert Foreman accomplished without the ability to read and write.

It was the most extraordinary thing the manager had ever heard, because even though the foreman was illiterate, he had built a business empire and made money together. The manager at the bank asked the foreman to invest his money but the foreman was reluctant. The bank manager assures him of fully gold-edged securities. The bank manager told him that he would do everything for him. The foreman only had to sign. But the foreman was upset because he could not read the papers. Also, being illiterate, he may not even know what he is signing. So, he told the manager that he could not read and write, when the manager heard this, he was stunned, he found it extraordinary that an illiterate man could amass such a huge wealth. The manager was surprised to see his ability without education.

(b) Why is the acquisition of a sophisticated imported car "an irrelevancy and nuisance" for Narayan?

Ans: The acquisition of a sophisticated, imported car was 'irrelevant and a nuisance' for Narayan because apart from its high maintenance cost and the need of driving a hundred miles for every simple repair job, moving around in it meant the end of his privacy and anonymity. R. He could not sneak out of public events by pretending that he was out of town, as his new car drew attention to his movements whenever he went inside the city. Thus, the public became interested in his car and responded with genuine curiosity and admiration. Apart from this, having a car also hindered his habit of taking long daily walks. Thus, Narayan began to feel that buying an imported car was not the best decision.

(c) What did Mriganko Babu do on reaching home and why?

Ans: On reaching home, Mriganko Babu went straight to his room and searched under his cupboard as per the guidance of the ghost of the theft accused, Ahbiram. He finds the watch and realizes that Abhiram was innocent. He had to suffer the consequences of what he did not do. After receiving that watch, Mriganko Babu decided that if anything was ever stolen from his house, he would not seek the help of an exorcist.

(d) Why did Jim say their presents were "too nice to use just at present"?

Ans:- In 'The Gift of the Magi' Jim said, 'Let us put away our Christmas presents and keep them with us for a while. They are too nice to use' because he did not want Della to feel bad that he could not use the watch chain.

(e) In spite of not being any wiser, does Lynd lose faith in books? What does he still believe?

Ans: Despite not being very intelligent, Robert Lynd never lost his faith in books. Lynd believed that knowledge could be found somewhere in books and wanted to obtain it at the cost of a few shillings. He read Everson and Marcus Aurelius but did not get the desired result of becoming wise. But Lind never lost his faith because he firmly believed that somewhere there exists a philosopher from whom he could imbibe the strength of philosophy and character.
