REPORT WRITING

 

Report writing is an important part of English composition nowadays. Generally students are asked to write a report on some specific events like accidents, festivals, meetings, sports etc. Some broad outlines are usually given as hints. Students are asked to prepare a report based on the given prompts.

Rules for writing reports:

There are some specific rules for writing a good report. Some of them are mentioned below:

(i) Read the outline or hint carefully until you get a clear idea of the topic.

(ii) The report should have an attractive title or title related to the topic.

(iii) Follow the sequence of points given in the outline. Don't skip any point.

(iv) The report should be written in simple language.

(v) The sentences in the report should be written in past tense and passive voice.

(vi) The place and time of reporting must be stated.

(vii) Remember that only practice makes you perfect.

1. A newspaper reporter was sent to report on a road accident. Below you can see one page of his notes. Use the information to complete the report he wrote for his newspaper. Do not add any new information. Write your answers in the blank spaces.

Sonpur: Yesterday, on 13 February, a road accident occurred at 6.35 pm. Near Sonpur, 25 km. When a jeep driver from Guwahati collided with a tree near the road and overturned. According to an eyewitness, the jeep applied brakes to avoid colliding with a speeding local bus coming from the opposite direction in the middle of the road. The driver lost control of the jeep and the jeep unfortunately hit a tree and overturned. Jeep driver Anant Das (35) died on the spot. Three other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

2. A staff-reporter of an English daily based in Guwahati, while on his rounds for news, came upon the scene of grenade blast at Ulubari crossing under the flyover. He made the following notes for a report. Write a report for him using the information from his notes.

Guwahati: 11 Mar, A tragic grenade explosion occurred at Ulubari crossing under the flyover at around 9 pm. yesterday.

The road crossing at Ulubari was very busy with vehicles and pedestrians yesterday evening. According to an eyewitness, suddenly a bang was heard on the road. Although the panic-stricken area was surrounded by the police, a grenade was still thrown from the flyover. It is estimated that five people were injured due to this. Police checking was going on. But no one has been arrested yet. Eventually higher officials visited the area.

3. A newspaper reporter visited the site of a road accident and made the following notes in his notepad. Study the information therein and write the report for him.

Flood Caused Havoc in Dhemaji

Dhemaji: 10 Mar, The whole district of Dhemaji had been in the grip of a terrible flood for the last few days.

The flood situation turned critical yesterday following a 25 feet breach on the several embankments on the Brahmaputra. The devastating flood affected almost 600 villages. At least 30,000 hectors of crops were damaged by the flood. Moreover, about 25,000 persons took shelter on the national highway and railway lines. An army of soldiers had been pressed into service to rescue the marooned people. The District Administrator of Dhemaji also provided relief to the flood affected people.

Guwahati: 9 October, Yesterday an audacious robbery took place in broad daylight in Sonpur, 25 kilometers away. In United Bank branch from Guwahati.

As told by the bank employees, around 11.30 am, four armed robbers came in a jeep and entered the bank, snatched a bunch of keys and ran away with Rs 15 lakh. The cashier who tried to protest vigorously was shot. Till now the police investigation is going on, but no one has been arrested.

Guwahati: On February 17, at around 6 pm, a massive fire broke out in the warehouses of Athgaon, the heart of Guwahati city. Tomorrow.

According to an eyewitness, the fire started from a nearby chemical store and several warehouses were gutted. Apart from this, some buildings near the warehouses were also damaged. Two laborers working in the warehouse died and four others were seriously injured. Five fire engines reached the spot but by then it was too late. It was estimated that the total damage was worth several crores of rupees.

Madhupur: A massive fire broke out in Madhupur market at around 6 pm on 16 October. Tomorrow.

Madhupur market was destroyed in a massive fire last evening. The cause of the fire was a gas cylinder that exploded in a small hotel. A nearby hut also caught fire and then the fire spread due to the wind. Apart from this, fire broke out in the market shed also. After 15 minutes the fire brigade reached the spot and tried to extinguish the fire. No one has been injured yet. A large amount of property was destroyed. The fire was finally brought under control at 6.30 pm.

As told by bank employees, at around 4.30 pm, four armed men came into the bank and stormed the bank. They also threatened the bank staff at gunpoint and ran away after looting Rs 15 lakh. No one has been injured yet. Police investigation is still going on, but no one has been arrested yet.

Ultimately the injured person and the dead body were taken to G.M.C. have been taken sent.

Guwahati: 6 September, Teacher's Day was celebrated yesterday in 'Little Flower School'.

The function was organized by the student union. It started at around 10 am in the school auditorium. The headmaster also presided over it. First of all, flowers were offered on the portrait of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. Furthermore, speakers including teachers and students spoke on the significance of the day. Apart from this, students honored the teachers by giving them flower bouquets and gifts. In his concluding speech the Principal thanked the students. He called him Dr. S. Guwahati: 10 August, Yesterday flood relief work was done by the students of our school.

Students of our school carried out flood relief work among the flood affected people of Dhubri district. Many students of our school participated in it. They also collected medicines, clothes, food items etc. from traders and voluntary organizations.

At the same time, we started the journey to the flood affected areas on August 9 at around 11.15 am. The total number of people affected by the flood was approximately one thousand five hundred. We also found that people of four villages have been badly affected. Ultimately we distributed relief materials like medicines, clothes, food items etc. to the affected people.

Guwahati: November 21, The 11th Guwahati Book Fair started from 10th of this month at the grounds of Assam Engineering Institute Chandmari.

The book fair was inaugurated by the Honorable Governor of Assam. A nice inauguration ceremony was organized by the Book Fair Committee. Famous singers Zubin Garg and Angraag Papon attended the ceremony. At the same time, many publishers of the state like Kamakhya Book Stall, Bina Library, Jyoti Prakashan etc. participated in the book fair. Many outside publishers also participated this year.

Furthermore, the committee expected huge crowds and good sales. The end of the book fair was very good.

Flood water coming from the hills of Arunachal further increased the severity of the flood caused by the breach. Furthermore, devastating floods affected around 600 villages including paddy fields. At least 30,000 hectares of crops were destroyed by the floods.

Additionally, around 25,000 people took shelter on national highways and railway lines. Government relief was provided to the flood affected people, but it was not enough for them. Many organizations came forward to help the affected people with relief materials.

Annual Prize Day at Assam Valley School

Guwahati: 17 February, Assam Valley School's Annual Awards Day was held yesterday in the school auditorium.

All the students of the school participated in the program along with their parents. There was a celebratory atmosphere in the school also. The program was started at around 11 am with the cooperation of the students and teachers of the school. The Education Minister was invited as the chief guest in the program.

Apart from this, the Education Minister and other guests were welcomed by the Principal. Awards were given to the students by the Education Minister. In the end he gave an encouraging speech to motivate all the students.
