Ans: The name of the vicar of St. Peter's Church was Albert Edward Foreman.

Ans: The new vicar came from the East End.

(c) What is the name of the book that R.K Narayan has been planning to write?    1

Ans: R. K. The name of the book Narayan is planning to write is "The Testament of a Walker."

(d) For how long did Narayan use his car?        1

Ans: Narayan used his car for a total period of ten years.

(e) What is the full name of Mriganko Babu?        1

Ans: Mriganko Babu's full name is Mriganko Shekhar Mukhopadhyay.

(f) Whose voice does Mriganko Babu recognize in the voice of the scarecrow?      1

Ans: The voice of Mriganko Babu, who was recognized in the voice of the scarecrow, was that of his old servant Abhiram.

(a) How did the Verger regard his official dress?     2

Ans: Verger considered his official dress to be the iconic symbol of his office. Without it she had a feeling of being somewhat inadequately dressed.

(b) What impression did the Verger have about the new Vicar?    2

Ans: The Verger did not like the new Vicar. He thought that the new vicar wanted to control everything according to his own way. The Verge M regretted his predecessor because the new Vicar always wanted to rule every activity the church.

(c) What did R.K Narayan do to turn his energies again to write stories?  2

Ans: R.K. Narayan decides to get rid of the car, locking it in the car as soon as possible so as to reroute his energy to write the story.

(d) What does Narayan begin to fear after every visit to the workshop?     2

Ans: After moving to the workshop, Narayan began to fear that he would go bankrupt if he had to spend exorbitant amounts of money every other week for his car.

(e) Why did Mriganko Babu never consult the almanac before travelling anywhere?    2

Ans: Mriganko Babu never saw the almanac before traveling anywhere as he was not one to believe in superstitions.

(f) Why did the driver go to Panagarh? 2

Ans: Mriganko Babu gets stuck near a paddy field on his way to the city as his car has run out of petrol. Mriganko Babu pointed this out to the driver, but he paid no heed. So, he sent his driver to fetch petrol from Panagarh and hopped back in his car.

(g) What did Jim do to get a gift for Della?     2

Ans: Jim had sold his most precious treasure, E, to buy a present for Della. A gold watch given to him by his father and grandfather.

(h) What did Della ask Madame Sofronie and what was he answer?    2

Ans: Della asks Madame Sofronie if she will buy her hair. Madame Sofronie replied that she would buy the hair and then asked him to take it off for her to see.

(i) Why was the author of 'On Not Being a philosopher' fearfully excited?    2

Ans: The author was horrified because he had never read Epictetus, but had often seen it on the shelf and even quoted it.

(j) Who is Zeus?    2

Ans: Zeus is the king of the Greek pantheon of gods and goddesses. He is a symbol of power and order.

3. Give brief answer to any three of the following:   4x3=12

(a) Describe the circumstances under which the Verger had to lose his job in St. Peter's Church.    4

Ans: Verger named Albert Edward Foreman faithfully performed his duties in a church for sixteen years. He rose to the respected office of Verger on the strength of his dedicated service and hard work. Verger's eligibility was challenged with the appointment of a new vicar. The day after the christening ceremony the new vicar called Verger into the vestry where two wardens of the church were waiting for him. At first Victor admires Verger's honesty and ability to work. But then he disregarded his long years of dedicated service on the grounds that Verger could not read and write. The new vicar was shocked to learn that Verger was illiterate. Albert was shocked but defended himself by saying that the previous vicar had no objection, even that he could manage everything without education. But Victor was determined. He told Verger that he had no right to risk an accident which might be caused by Verger's lamentable ignorance. He asked him if he could not learn. Verger then prepared. The vicar gives Verger the option of failing to learn the letters, which will cause him to lose his job. The action was also firm. He refused to accept the offer and preferred to resign believing that it was too late to learn at that level. So due to lack of education Verger resigned from his respected office and thus lost his job.

(b) What are the reasons for the author's impervious attitude towards his car?   4

Ans: The acquisition of a sophisticated, imported car was 'an irrelevance and a nuisance' for Narayan because apart from its high maintenance cost and the need to travel a hundred miles for every simple repair job, moving around in it meant the end of his privacy and anonymity. Was., Much to RK Narayan's dismay, his new car got him noticed by people everywhere. He could not slip out of public events with the false pretence of being out of town, as his new car drew attention to his movements every time he drove inside the city. Thus, his car aroused the interest of the people and they reacted with genuine curiosity and admiration. Moreover, the possession of a car also hindered his habit of taking long, daily walks. Thus, Narayan realized that buying an imported car was not the best decision for him.

(c) Why did Abhiram leave the house of Mriganko Babu?   4

Ans: Abhiram, an old servant of Mriganko Babu, had lost his job three years ago for stealing a gold watch. He worked for Mriganko Babu's family for twenty years. Everyone trusted him. But one day he is accused of stealing a gold watch which Mriganko Babu had received as a wedding gift. Abhiram told himself innocent. He denied it. Then Mriganko Babu's father called a tantrik, who did the magic and kept on rotating and rotating a simple shell tray until it stopped and pointed at Abhiram. Everyone thought that Abhiram was guilty, so he was dismissed from his job.

(d) What moral lessons are stressed upon in "The Gift of the Magi"?    4

Ans: The story 'The Gift of the Magi' deals with the moral lesson of what is the true spirit of gift-giving at Christmas. Jim and Della were both poor, so they had to sell their most prized possessions to buy each other Christmas presents. Della gives up her long lustrous hair to make the Queen of Sheba jealous of her, while Jim gives up his gold watch, a family heirloom. Jim brought Della a set of tortoise shell combs, which she had always longed for, but it was too good for her use. He let her long hair down to buy her a platinum fob chain for Jim's watch. Della's gift for Jim was too good to be put to use. Jim and Della both sacrifice their most cherished possession in order to buy something to use for the other's most cherished possession. This is where the true spirit of Christmas gifting lies. Jim and Della both demonstrate their love by giving up their most cherished possession. Selflessness and a desire to add to the happiness of the recipient of the gift are the central concerns here. It also shows a willingness to make sacrifices for them.

(e) Discuss the circumstances that lead to Lynd's reading Epictetus.   4

Ans: Robert Lind overheard a conversation between two friends, in which one friend asked the other whether the latter had read Epictetus. Lind, who is looking for a book to become wise, discovers that on her bookshelves are some works by the philosopher Epictetus. This inspired Lind to read Epictetus.
